Teaching for Impact: Case Teaching and Writing with Local Context
Friday, September 18, 2026
4:00-5:00 PM NDT
The case method transforms the classroom into an active learning environment, placing students in realistic managerial situations and challenging them to analyze complex problems, evaluate alternatives, and make decisions. Facilitated by Ivey Publishing, this interactive workshop will explore how instructors can use the case method to create engaging learning experiences while highlighting the value of writing, publishing, and teaching with local business cases.
Particular attention will be given to cases grounded in businesses and organizations across Atlantic Canada and other local contexts. Local cases bring immediacy and relevance to classroom discussions, connect management concepts to familiar economic and social environments, and expose students to the real challenges organizations face in their own communities. For faculty, they also open opportunities to turn firsthand knowledge of local firms, industries, and business issues into publishable teaching materials.
The session will introduce practical considerations for identifying strong case opportunities, developing effective teaching cases, and navigating the case-publication process. Participants will also explore how to select and facilitate cases that encourage student participation, critical thinking, and the application of management concepts.
Whether you are looking to strengthen your case teaching or develop your own cases, you will leave with practical ideas and resources for teaching with greater impact and bringing locally grounded cases into your teaching and scholarly work.
