In February 2024, the founder of the South African health care provider Quali Health was planning a strategic shift, several years after suffering a total collapse and rebirth of her original organization. Leveraging her only remaining assets—community trust and patient databases in two townships—she had restarted the business after all four of her clinics were destroyed, which she referred to as a “phoenix model” rising from the ashes of her previous venture. The second iteration of the venture was a home-based digitally-enabled health care service with community health workers making home visits, supported by remote doctors and adaptive technology to overcome literacy and infrastructure barriers. Although the new business model was clinically effective, it was struggling to achieve scalability and financial sustainability. Facing a critical strategic dilemma with profound implications for her original social mission, the founder identified three potential paths for the future of her venture: deepen her social mission, pivot for stability, or pursue a corporate gambit.
