This case highlights the journey of Adam Goodes, a former Australian Football League (AFL) professional player and advocate for Indigenous rights and anti-racist causes. Through each seminal moment and experience highlighted in the case, students will be invited to reflect on examples of responsible leadership, including the associated impacts realized through the various life phases illustrated. The case does not seek to heroize or villainize any particular individual or group. Rather, it is an exploration of an individual’s purposeful journey, following a sequence of events and defining moments.

Learning Objectives

This case can be used to explore responsible leadership as a framework and help participants understand how purpose, commitment, character, and competencies are associated with decision-making that considers the “common good” and resists the normalization of decision-making that automatically prioritizes enhancing economic metrics.
