In July 2025, Astronomer, a New York-based data orchestration firm, faced a governance and reputational crisis after a viral concert clip showed its chief executive officer and chief people officer in a personal embrace. Both leaders resigned, and the board launched an inquiry into workplace conduct. With the immediate fallout contained, the board now faced a dilemma: Should Astronomer implement a zero-tolerance policy, adopt a disclosure-and-recusal policy, or maintain informal handling of workplace relationships? Each option came with trade-offs in terms of governance credibility, organizational culture, and stakeholder trust.

Learning Objectives

The case is suitable for students in both undergraduate and graduate degree programs, as well as for both full-time and executive-level participants. The case can be used in an HR management course to cover modules on ethics in HR management, HR policies, sexual harassment, and leadership, power, and influence. The case may be used in a business ethics course to cover modules on ethical decision-making, conflicts of interest, and disclosure. This case allows students to assess ethical considerations, organizational risks, and policy design dilemmas surrounding workplace romance, particularly when senior leaders are involved. It raises broader questions about governance, transparency, and how organizations can rebuild trust after reputational crises. After working through the case and assignment questions, students will be able to do the following: Identify and analyze the organizational risks that arise from undisclosed romantic relationships in the workplace. Examine the factors that typically lead employees to enter into workplace relationships. Evaluate policy alternatives, including zero-tolerance, disclosure-and-recusal, or case-by-case disposal approaches, for managing personal relationships in organizational settings. Propose strategies to rebuild trust among stakeholders after a public controversy.
