Circular Economy at Scale (B): LanzaTech's Mission to Turn Pollution into Profits

During the first half of 2025, LanzaTech announced several major strategic and operational developments designed to focus the company's priorities on the highest-impact opportunities (predominantly related to SAF infrastructure) and to right-size the company's cost structure in order to accelerate its path to profitability and ultimately ensure LanzaTech's long-term viability. On January 21, the company indicated its intent to form LanzaX, which would house the research and commercial initiatives around the synthetic biology applications. On March 4, the company published a press release titled "LanzaTech Announces Progress on Strategic Actions to Sharpen Business Focus and Improve Cost Structure". The company announced plans to "streamline priorities" and reduce annual cash operating expenses by $30 million. On May 9, the company announced a $40 million preferred equity investment by a large, longstanding investor, and plans to raise another $35 million to $60 million as subsequent funding to the preferred equity issuance. The financing is expected to be used to fund ongoing operations and extend the runway needed to transform the company from a research and development hub to commercially deploying its proven technology globally, with a focus on producing ethanol as a key feedstock for SAF producers.
