Eagles Nest Association of Waterdown was a not-for-profit organization in Waterdown, Ontario. It had two active programs: the HOPE Centre (Home of Practical Education) and Rescued & Restored (R&R), a thrift shop that provided up to 40 per cent of the organization’s revenue. Changes in the retail environment caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and increased turnover of volunteers at the store have forced the volunteer coordinator to evaluate the costs and benefits of the organization’s staffing model. Should Eagles Nest hire paid staff as sales associates for the thrift store or recruit volunteers to fill those roles?

Learning Objectives

Ideal for use in undergraduate-level courses in human resource management and non-profit management or in an introductory business course in a section on human resources, this case allows students to quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate the costs and benefits of hiring paid staff and recruiting volunteers for a non-profit organization. The case also provides for discussion of factors that reduce volunteer turnover. After working through the case and assignment questions, students will be able to

calculate the costs of hiring paid staff versus recruiting and supporting volunteers;
assess qualitative factors that favour the use of staff and those that favour the use of volunteers; and
craft a persuasive recommendation to the executive director of a not-for-profit organization.
