On April 5, 2025, the chief executive officer of EqCap Group (EqCap), received an email from a high-net-worth client, forwarding an article about meme stocks. The email reopened a discussion from December 2021, when EqCap had advised clients to avoid meme stocks amid AMC Entertainment Holding Inc. (AMC)’s volatility. With meme-stock activity re-emerging in 2024–25, EqCap faced renewed client questions about its advisory stance in sentiment-driven markets. The case describes the market dynamics associated with meme stocks, including social media–driven narratives, retail investor coordination, options activity, and short squeezes, and their effects on investors, hedge funds, trading platforms, and issuers.
