In August 2025, Microsoft Corporation (Microsoft) folded GitHub into its CoreAI division, ending years of semi-autonomy and placing the platform under the leadership of Jay Parikh, a former engineering executive at Meta Platforms Inc. The move positioned GitHub at the centre of Microsoft’s “artificial intelligence (AI) agent factory” vision, linking Copilot, Azure, and OpenAI into a unified AI development ecosystem. As Copilot adoption accelerated, Microsoft pushed to transform GitHub into a core engine of enterprise AI production, intensifying tensions around trust, governance, regulation, and competition.
