Glamping UA began in 2019 as the first glamping business in Ukraine. As the chief commercial officer, Andrii Rodkin managed strategic partnerships, client relations, and project execution and established two additional arms to the business: exporting products and glamping consultancy services. Rodkin and his business partner, Alex Konovalov, pivoted through the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. With 50 employees and growing operations, the business had a bright future. However, circumstances changed when Konovalov was conscripted. How could Rodkin manage the entire business and yet stay agile so he could adapt to the constantly changing economic and geopolitical circumstances around him?

Learning Objectives

This case is intended for use in leadership, and entrepreneurship and innovation courses in undergraduate and graduate programs. This case will help students appreciate the complex issues associated with establishing and maintaining an entrepreneurial venture in highly uncertain environments. After working through the case, students should be able to do the following:
  • Apply entrepreneurship theory, and in particular lean start-up theory, to the complex issues associated with maintaining entrepreneurial ventures in times of extreme uncertainty.
  • Identify and understand the significant pivots entrepreneurial businesses navigate during times of crisis.
  • Reconsider the relationship between short-term and long-term strategic management amid uniquely volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous conditions, and design strategies to support business agility.
  • Consider personal decision-making as an entrepreneur during times of extreme crisis.
