John Deere: Building the future

John Deere spent more than a decade transforming itself from an equipment manufacturer into a central system provider for modern farming. Beginning in the early 2010s, Deere invested in connectivity, telemetry, and coordination tools that allowed large farming operations to be managed as integrated systems rather than collections of machines. Over time, this effort expanded through acquisitions in artificial intelligence and automation, bringing key capabilities inside the firm. In 2022, Deere made the shift explicit with its Leap Ambitions strategy, framing its future around connected machines, engaged acres, and recurring revenue. The transformation delivered strong financial and strategic results. Precision agriculture became a core growth engine, and Deere?s systems were deeply embedded in customers? operations. At the same time, tighter control over software, diagnostics, and repairs changed how ownership was experienced in practice. Farmer frustration, political attention, and regulatory debate followed. As lower-cost alternatives emerged and Deere signalled further moves into agronomic recommendations, the case asks a simple but difficult question: when a strategy works this well, how much control can a company afford to exercise without putting trust - and its long-term position - at risk?
