Since its founding in 1993, KPIT Technologies Limited followed a series of changes in scope and organizational structure. Based in Pune, India, the company was a global leader in software for automotive manufacturers. The first major shift in scope it underwent in 2018 was a successful decision to drop all other business clients from its portfolio and focus only on the automotive engineering segment. The company that emerged from that decision grew rapidly to achieve a valuation of US$5 billion by April 2024. However, as the global automotive software market started to evolve rapidly with changing consumer trends and preferences for connectivity, safety, and the environment, KPIT Technologies Limited needed to revisit its strategy. The company’s top management team was wondering how to prepare and respond to a rapidly changing market and how to prioritize broader developments in a variety of new potential markets, including commercial, aviation, and marine vehicles.

Learning Objectives

This case study was designed for use in a course on business strategy at the MBA or senior undergraduate levels. The case can be positioned toward the middle of the course, as a capstone case that analyzes how shifts in industry structure require a change in business strategy. This case helps students understand the interplay between business strategy and corporate scope in context of new technologies, such as embedded software for passenger cars.
