Students lead an organization toward profitability by using activity-based costing to optimize spending. This interactive microlearning exercise teaches how to use profitability analysis to increase the bottom line. Students explore the concepts of activity-based costing and cost objects. They learn to link revenues and costs to cost objects in order to determine their profitability. For practice, the students will evaluate the profitability of several products and geographic markets. The microsimulation culminates with a practical business challenge wherein the students help a business optimize its spending in marketing, sales, and HR with the goal of maximizing profitability.
The Profitability microsimulation is part of the Marketplace microsimulations ecosystem. The quick format, bite-sized delivery, and individualized pacing increase student focus, engagement, and knowledge retention. The microsimulation can be used as self-study prior to a class session, such as in a flipped classroom model, or in class to prime a rich discussion.
