Midwest Industrial Components: Betting on humanoid robots: Automation limits, labor scarcity, and a CEO's decision

Midwest Industrial Components (MIC) is a privately held U.S. industrial manufacturer with annual revenues of approximately $780 million. MIC supplies precision mechanical components to customers in the automotive, HVAC, agricultural machinery, and industrial equipment industries. MIC has long been recognized for its ability to handle high-mix, medium-volume production. The company has built its competitive position on flexibility, engineering expertise, and close customer relationships. However, by 2025, this model was under growing strain. MIC faces persistent labor shortages, rising overtime and injury rates, and declining on-time delivery performance. Despite sustained investments in traditional automation, large portions of its operations?particularly machine tending, unstructured material handling, inspection, and final assembly?remain dependent on human judgment and dexterity. As labor availability tightens and customer expectations increase, these operational bottlenecks are becoming more costly and harder to manage. Against this backdrop, MIC?s CEO, Sarah Whitaker, must decide whether to proceed with Apptronik's proposal to deploy humanoid robots in a pilot program. The proposal involves an 18-month pilot with 20 robots across two plants: Bloomington, MIC?s most critical manufacturing facility, and Evansville, a lower-risk site focused on assembly preparation and material handling. The pilot would cost approximately $11 million and would be offered as a subscription service, including hardware, software, and on-site support. The robots are expected to fill labor gaps, reduce physical strain on operators, and stabilize throughput in selected workflows. Apptronik estimates 10?20% productivity improvements in targeted areas, labor redeployment equivalent to 75?100 full-time operators, and modest reductions in injury exposure. However, these benefits are uncertain. The robots are early-stage technologies with limited track records of sustained performance.
