Necessity Is the Mother of Disruption: DeepSeek and the Search for Open-Source AI’s Innovation Strategy

In January 2025, global headlines reported the stunning debut of Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Co., Ltd. (DeepSeek), a Chinese AI start-up that released an open-source large language model delivering GPT-4–level performance at a fraction of the cost. Its launch unsettled global markets, wiping hundreds of billions from incumbent valuations and forcing dominant players to reconsider their resource-intensive strategies.
