In April 2023, the owner of a small women-focused baseball cap company, Ponyback Inc. (Ponyback), wanted to review the venture’s financial performance to date. The company sold ponytail-friendly baseball caps that had a magnetic strip at the back to provide flexibility for different hair thicknesses and styles. Although Ponyback had seen tremendous growth since inception, the owner worried that this growth may be slowing down soon and worried about the company’s lack of profitability despite its sales success. She also wondered how she would finance her business moving forward. The owner wanted to assess the company’s past performance and then project an income statement and balance sheet to help her determine the best way forward.

Learning Objectives

This case is best positioned for a managerial accounting or strategy course at the undergraduate level as it provides comprehensive coverage of a number of concepts addressed in such courses.
