Robots on Patrol and on Plates: Contrasting Tales of Deployment

This exercise explores the contrasting outcomes of two robot deployments in different sectors: law enforcement and hospitality. The first mini case study highlights the failure of the New York Police Department’s (NYPD) K5 robot, which was designed to patrol high-crime areas like Times Square. Despite initial enthusiasm, the robot faced public backlash over privacy concerns, racial biases, and its technical limitations. Criticism grew, leading to the program’s termination. In contrast, the second mini case study showcases the success of a robot server named Mushroom at Iowa’s Fushi Yami restaurant, which addressed labour shortages by efficiently delivering meals and enhancing customer experience. The robot’s cost-effectiveness and ability to assist rather than replace human workers made it a popular addition, attracting new customers and boosting revenue. This exercise emphasizes the importance of understanding public perception, proactively taking action to manage expectations, and ensuring transparency in robotic deployment to achieve success in deploying robots or artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
