In 2023, with global tourism increasing rapidly and several governments realigning their focus on promoting and enhancing tourist traffic, travellers were presented with an opportunity to witness new trends in the face of growing climate change issues and technological advancement. Among the countries adapting to a changing stance, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was undergoing a drastic economic transformation when it decided to advance a new “green” approach, promote sustainability, and combat climate change. As a part of its revamped agenda, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia initiated various projects focused on hospitality and environmental conservation as it aspired to make its tourism sector eco-friendly. How could the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia ensure that its efforts would solidify its image as a preferred green tourism destination?

Learning Objectives

This case is designed for undergraduate and graduate level students, particularly in courses focused on international tourism management, strategic marketing management, and sustainability. Participants will engage in discussions about Saudi Arabia’s initiatives to advance its sustainable tourism agenda, examining how the country aims to balance environmental responsibility with economic development through the promotion of green tourism. By analyzing these dynamics, students will enhance their understanding of strategic decision-making in the context of emerging market trends and sustainability challenges in the tourism sector. After working through the case and assignment questions, students will be able to

  • understand the global tourism industry and its key components;
  • assess how the tourism industry impacts and is impacted by climate change;
  • understand green tourism and its criticality for today’s fragile ecosystem;
  • conduct an exploratory analysis of the good practices that drive green tourism and how they are implemented across the spectrum (e.g., regulatory, economic, information-based); and
  • assess current green tourism practices in Saudi Arabia and which potential areas to target to enhance the “green” effect.
