For decades, the language of business value was uniform, robust, and universally understood. It was a language spoken through a common ledger of financial ratios that told a complete and legible story of corporate performance, business efficiency, and risk. A company’s balance sheet was its identity, and its income statement represented its health. Today, that traditional paradigm is no longer sufficient. A profound global shift in the way risk, value, and corporate responsibility are defined has revealed the limitations of a finance-only worldview. This shift, driven by investors, regulators, and a new generation of stakeholders, has given rise to a “second ledger” of non-financial data, written in the language of environmental, social, and governance (or ESG) criteria. Given ESG metric data with relevant financial metrics, can students match 11 anonymized companies with their respective industries?

Learning Objectives

This integrative exercise is designed for courses at the graduate level (e.g., MBA, Master’s in Finance and Sustainability) or in executive corporate training on ESG-related metrics. It is also suitable for courses on financial accounting, sustainable finance, ESG investing, and specialized modules such as climate risk and green finance. It is equally well-suited for executive education programs that focus on ESG investing, sustainable finance, and finance for non-finance managers. To reinforce the ideas covered in lectures, it can also be used as an exam, group or individual activity, or assignment. The instructor can adapt the Analysis as preferred, particularly in management development programs. For example, the initial stages of the exercise can be efficiently applied for students who are new to finance. The exercise’s versatility allows it to serve as a valuable teaching tool in a variety of academic and professional settings. After working through the exercise and assignment questions, students will be able to do the following:

Develop integrated analytical skills to move beyond siloed analysis and use financial and ESG data such as carbon dioxide intensity concurrently to form a holistic view of a company.
Understand materiality in practice and provide a concrete data-driven example of why certain KPIs such as research and development expenses, debt-to-equity ratio, and lost time injury rate are critical for some industries but irrelevant for others.
Reinforce financial and ESG KPI literacy by building fluency in defining and, more importantly, interpreting a wide range of standard corporate performance metrics.
Enhance forensic mindset and train students to identify “data fingerprints,” “extreme outliers,” and “smoking guns” in complex data sets to uncover a company’s underlying business model.
