The case asks students to examine three possible solutions to the dilemma that were explored by the tenants, landlord, and Campbell between August and December 2023 and to determine which is the most feasible from Union Co-op’s perspective. Learning Objectives
After working through the case and assignment questions students will be able to
- identify key stakeholders in an affordable housing project and explain the extent to which their goals are in alignment;
- apply different ethical theories to a proposed rent increase that would potentially save an affordable housing project, and consider whether the ends justify the means;
- generate additional solutions that would allow an affordable housing co-operative to balance the needs of all stakeholders in the case; and
- evaluate different strategies for preserving rental affordability from the perspective of a housing provider with limited capital.
